Spread-Bread Sparkles

is a simple Arcade game made on Pico-8 Game Engine, inspired by Flappy-Bird. You assume the role of a flying piece of toast to spread love and joy to the people amongst the clouds.

Jar:

Whilst flying, you must avoid the huge Jars that cover up the screen, where doing so, earns you 25 points. However, each time you pass the Jars they are spreading. They close in on each other making the game slightly harder.

People and Fruit:

Throwing spoonfuls of jam at people awards you with 50 points and a heart! In return, the gap between the Jars expands, making passing through them easier. Alongside the score, there is a time factor which decreases as you play the game. You must get the fruit if you want to increase your time. Strawberries award you with 150 time points.

Cherry:

Beware! Getting the cherry results in the player losing -300 points whilst the screen shakes uncontrollably, possibly making you crash into the Jars.

Cotton Candy:

Aim for the cotton candy for a whooping 550 time points!

Controls:

Use X to Flap/ Z to shoot

Theme Interpretation:

The theme it’s spreading! opened many creative ways for me to explore and develop into the game. I wanted to include the theme and have it as a core for most of the features. Like the name, nature and appearance of the character, the spreading wings, the spreading jars, the jam, even the particles that spread when the player shoots. Originally I wanted the game to be a sort of advertisement, incorporating the “spread the rumor for the best jam” feature as well. But run short on time and, well, experience, on how to actually do that.

Closing Statement:

This is my very first game. I am a novice game developer counting only a few months since I started. I am only coding on Pico-8 right now as I found out that its a great learning tool. What you see in Spread-bread Sparkles is essentially everything that I’ve learned the past months through tutorials or personal study and experimentation combined into one project. The game is definitely not perfect at this stage, for example, the collision for the bottom jar doesn’t work exactly as I want it to be. At the moment I don’t have the knowledge to make it better. However this has been a really cool and insightful experience and I am very happy I stumbled upon Thor and this community (quite recently). Thank you very much for the positivity, for letting us now that its okay to fail, for pushing us to experiment and try.
